Jackman & Kasody PLLC

Once all of the drama of your divorce dies down, it can be very easy to fall into a rut -- or even a major depression.

You can beat depression back, however, by taking some proactive steps in a healthy direction. Here are a few things you can do to start -- and you don't even have to wait until the divorce is final.

1. See a doctor.

You may have been neglecting your health for a while, especially if your marriage was putting you under a lot of stress. It won't hurt to get a physical. While you're there, talk to your doctor about problems you may be having related to the divorce -- like trouble sleeping or depression. Don't be afraid to try medication to help get you over a bad patch.

2. Find a financial planner.

You'd be surprised at how much a professional can help you reorganize your finances and set realistic, obtainable goals for the future. This is a must do step if you haven't handled your own financial affairs for a while because your spouse always did it or you're drowning in debt.

3. Start thinking about your needs in a partner.

Don't dive into a new relationship right away. You need to give yourself some time to think about what you do and don't want in your future partners before you get involved. Pay particular attention to the things that drove you away from your ex-spouse in the first place so that you don't make the same mistake twice.

There's no reason to stay in an unhappy marriage. Although divorce can be stressful, it can be the key to a brighter future.
