How to establish paternity

Establishing paternity is important for both Michigan fathers and their children. By establishing paternity, children who are born to unmarried parents have the same rights and benefits as those born to married parents. Not only do they get to exercise the right to have a relationship with both parents, but children also get the benefit of financial support from both parents.

Establishing legal paternity

According to a study conducted by a researcher from the University of Oklahoma, men in Michigan and the rest of the United States tend to more readily acknowledge their legal paternity of a child born out of wedlock if the mother is more healthy, wealthy and educated. The men are also slightly more eager to do so if the baby is a boy.

How can an unmarried father establish parental rights?

Establishing paternal rights outside of marriage can be challenging, especially for a biological father. Maternal rights can be established rather easily as a woman gives birth in a Michigan health care facility. However, some mothers might choose to withhold information about the identity of the father. Others might be unsure of the identity. A man who believes that he is the father of a child might face some legal challenges in order to formally establish the relationship, especially if there is contention with the mother.
